Tied to a Desk for Being Left-Handed: What Happened to Me, What My Brain Did, and Why I’m Thriving

When I was nine years old, I was tied to a desk because I was left-handed.

That sentence sounds dramatic.

It is also true.

I was in the third grade, near the end of the school year. My regular teacher went on maternity leave, and a substitute teacher took over our classroom.

I remember her.

She had black hair pulled tightly into a bun. Occasionally, one of the pins holding her hair would fall to the floor, and she would stamp her foot at it.

I sat in the center of the front row.

I wore glasses with lenses so thick that I describe them as looking like the bottoms of Coke bottles. Without them, I couldn’t see my hand clearly in front of my face.

I was quiet.

Very quiet.

I didn’t speak at school. I kept to myself, followed directions and read constantly. I was inquisitive and had advanced reading and comprehension skills, but I wasn’t the child challenging the teacher or questioning authority.

Teachers were authority figures.

And I was obedient.

Then one day, this substitute teacher walked to the chalkboard and wrote a word:

SINISTER.

The Word That Started It

Today, we commonly use sinister to describe something threatening, evil or ominous.

But the word has another history.

The Latin word sinister referred to the left side or left hand. Over centuries, cultural attitudes toward left and right helped give the word its negative associations. The right side became associated with correctness, skill and favor, while the left could be associated with awkwardness, suspicion or evil.

Even our language carries remnants of that history.

That morning, my substitute teacher explained the word and its association with left-handedness.

Then she asked the class a question:

“Is anyone here left-handed?”

I raised my hand.

I was the only one.

She took a flour sack towel and tied my left arm behind my back to my desk.

I remained tied that way from the beginning of class until lunch.

After lunch, I was tied again until recess.

After recess, I was tied again until the end of the school day.

Then it happened the next day.

And the next.

It continued for approximately six weeks.

And I never told anyone.

Why Didn’t I Say Anything?

Looking at the experience through adult eyes, there are obvious questions.

Why didn’t I tell my parents?

Why didn’t I refuse?

Why didn’t another child say something?

Why didn’t somebody stop her?

But those are adult questions.

I was nine.

I didn’t know she wasn’t allowed to do it.

That’s an important distinction.

Children don’t enter classrooms with an understanding of professional ethics, neurological development, bodily autonomy and appropriate disciplinary boundaries.

I knew something much simpler:

She was the teacher.

I was the student.

Teachers gave instructions.

Students obeyed them.

So I adapted.

Sixty-one-year-old me can look back at nine-year-old me with knowledge she didn’t have. But I don’t expect that little girl to have possessed the judgment of the adult I am today.

She did what she knew how to do.

She figured out how to function.

What Happens When You Force a Left-Handed Child to Be Right-Handed?

For generations, left-handed children in many cultures were discouraged—or outright forced—from using their dominant hand.

Today, handedness is understood as a complex biological trait involving genetics, development and brain lateralization. It isn’t simply a bad habit that needs to be corrected.

The human brain is lateralized, meaning some functions are represented differently across its two hemispheres. Handedness is related to this organization, although the popular idea that left-handed people are simply “right-brained” and right-handed people are “left-brained” is far too simplistic.

The actual neuroscience is much more interesting.

Using our hands involves networks responsible for movement, sensation, vision, spatial processing, coordination and motor planning. When we learn a physical skill, our brains become increasingly efficient at coordinating those networks.

I had already spent nine years developing as a naturally left-handed person.

Then one day, an adult physically prevented me from using that hand and required me to function differently.

I sometimes wonder:

What was happening inside my brain during those six weeks?

We can’t go back and scan my nine-year-old brain.

There is no scientific test that could establish that one classroom experience caused a particular ability I have today.

That’s important for me to say.

I can tell you what happened.

I can tell you what I experience now.

Science can explain mechanisms of stress, learning, motor adaptation and neuroplasticity.

But none of us can draw a perfectly straight causal line through sixty-one years of one human brain.

And I don’t need to.

The question itself is fascinating enough.

A Healthy Brain Under Duress

I don’t think of my childhood brain as defective.

Quite the opposite.

I think it was a healthy young brain confronted with an unhealthy demand.

And a healthy brain does something remarkable when the environment changes:

It learns.

Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to change its organization and connections in response to experience, learning and environmental demands.

Children’s brains are particularly plastic because they are still developing.

That plasticity is one reason children can learn astonishingly quickly.

It also means repeated experiences matter.

Stress adds another layer.

When we perceive a threat or intense challenge, systems involving the autonomic nervous system and stress hormones prepare the body and brain to respond. Short-term stress can sharpen attention and mobilize energy. Chronic or repeated stress can affect attention, learning, memory and emotional regulation.

What happens depends on many things: the intensity and duration of the stress, the child’s temperament, developmental stage, environment, relationships and what happens afterward.

My situation contained another ingredient:

constraint.

My dominant arm wasn’t merely discouraged.

It was physically unavailable.

My brain still had to solve the ordinary problems of a third-grade classroom.

Write.

Manipulate objects.

Complete assignments.

Navigate the day.

Function.

So it did.

My Tetris Brain

Today, I am very ambidextrous.

But there is another part of the way I experience the world that is much harder to describe.

I call it my Tetris brain.

I see the world in grids.

I don’t mean that I hallucinate literal graph-paper lines over everything I look at. It’s more like a constant organizational layer in the background of my visual experience.

Spacing.

Alignment.

Placement.

Angles.

Movement.

Fit.

The closest comparison I’ve found is what I imagine it might be like to see through the compound eyes of a fly—not because flies literally see a Tetris board, but because the idea of many pieces of visual information existing simultaneously feels familiar to me.

The grid isn’t something I consciously activate.

It’s there.

I can look at objects and see how they fit together. I can organize physical spaces almost like pieces in a puzzle. Moving, packing and arranging things can become a spatial problem my brain seems eager to solve.

Hence:

Tetris superpower.

Did those six weeks create it?

I don’t know.

Maybe aspects of this way of processing were already part of me. Maybe forced right-handedness influenced existing pathways. Maybe later experiences strengthened them. Maybe it’s a combination of things I’ll never completely untangle.

Human beings love a clean explanation.

Brains aren’t always that cooperative.

And Then There’s My Memory

My memory is interesting, too.

It isn’t photographic.

I don’t automatically recall every day of my life, and I’m not claiming perfect memory.

Memory isn’t a video recording. Human memories can change, details can be reconstructed, and confidence doesn’t guarantee accuracy.

But some of my autobiographical memories are extraordinarily rich.

When I can access one, I don’t simply remember the headline.

I can remember the scene.

Temperature.

Wind.

Smells.

Clothing.

Where people were standing.

Exact conversations—or what I experience as remarkably detailed conversational recall.

It’s less like retrieving a bullet point and more like mentally returning to a place.

My earliest confirmed memory is from approximately eighteen months old.

That is unusually early. Most adults experience what researchers call childhood amnesia, meaning we retain relatively few autobiographical memories from our first several years of life.

But “unusual” and “impossible” aren’t the same thing.

What I describe is related to episodic autobiographical memory: memory for personally experienced events that includes contextual details such as where and when something happened and what the experience felt like.

Smell is particularly interesting because olfactory information has unusually direct relationships with brain regions involved in emotion and memory. That’s one reason a smell can suddenly transport someone decades into the past.

For me, sensory details can become part of the architecture of the memory itself.

It also explains something about the way I tell stories.

I give details because I remember details.

The Teacher Who Came Next

Then came fourth grade.

I had Mr. Stallsmith.

He was the best teacher of my elementary education.

I find that part of this story important because human development isn’t just a collection of injuries.

It’s also a collection of relationships, corrections, discoveries, safe places, good teachers and new experiences.

One teacher showed me what authority could do to a child.

Another showed me what a teacher could be.

Both exist in my history.

But neither gets to write the rest of it.

I Don’t Live in Could’ve, Would’ve, Should’ve

I could spend the rest of my life asking:

What if that substitute teacher had never entered my classroom?

Would I think differently?

Would I process space differently?

Would I be as ambidextrous?

Would my memory work differently?

Could’ve.

Would’ve.

Should’ve.

I don’t live there.

Curiosity is different.

I am deeply curious about what happened to my brain because understanding ourselves is fascinating. I want to understand stress. Neuroplasticity. Memory. Handedness. Adaptation. Perception.

But curiosity doesn’t require me to wish my life away.

I cannot change what happened to that nine-year-old girl.

I can acknowledge her.

I can believe her.

I can allow what happened to be real without turning it into the entirety of who I am.

That distinction matters to me.

I’m Not Just Still Here

Sometimes survival stories stop at survival.

“You went through something terrible, but you survived.”

Yes.

I did.

But I want another word.

Thriving.

The experience happened.

It was wrong.

My silence doesn’t make it less real.

My adaptation doesn’t make what happened acceptable.

And finding strengths in myself today doesn’t retroactively justify what was done to me.

Those truths can exist together.

I don’t have to turn suffering into a gift to make peace with my life.

I don’t have to pretend something didn’t hurt simply because something useful eventually grew nearby.

I can simply look at the whole human being.

The nine-year-old girl who raised her left hand because the teacher asked a question.

The child who didn’t know she had the right to object.

The brain that kept solving the problems placed in front of it.

The woman who now sees grids everywhere.

The storyteller who remembers the wind, the smells, the clothes and the conversations.

The person who still asks questions.

And the person who isn’t spending today wishing yesterday had been different.

It happened.

It was real.

I’m still here.

But that’s no longer enough to describe my life.

I’m thriving.

And perhaps that’s one of the most human things we do.

We experience.

We adapt.

We learn.

We change.

We keep discovering who we’ve become.

And with every breath, we get another chance—and another choice.
